When Will You Need a Lawyer?

Bankruptcy Lawyer

This is a continuation of my series of articles on what lawyers can do for you. My last article, “What do Lawyers do for You?” explained what good lawyers can do to help their clients, generally.

You might not think about it, but, at just about every stage of your life, you’ll need the help of a lawyer. Most people only think they need a lawyer when they are arrested, as in, “you have the right to remain silent” and “you have the right to an attorney”. So why would anyone actually want to see a lawyer? At just about every stage of your life, it is important to have a lawyer at your side, advising you.

Here are some examples of when a lawyer will be able to help you in your everyday life.

If you are young, in your 20s or 30s, just working at your job, minding your own business, you need to start your financial plan. You’ll need a will, possibly a trust, and have your finances in order. And, if you have student loans, or college tuition, you might have problems paying them. Lawyers can help you with those problems, in negotiating with the lenders.

Buying a house? You’ll need a real estate lawyer, one who can help negotiate the purchase. You’ll need a lawyer to work on all of the little details in the contract, to make sure it will work best for you.

Starting a business, you’ll need a lawyer to see if you should incorporate, and to do the necessary documentation and registration. Later, when you start making money, you’ll need a tax lawyer to be sure you are complying with the tax laws and also paying the taxes.

If you or your business run into problems, such as getting sued, you’ll need a lawyer to defend you. Or, if you or your business have problems paying debt, you’ll need an attorney to determine your best options or defenses. You may decide to defend the lawsuit, or file Chapter 7 or Chapter 13 Bankruptcy.

If you fall behind in your house payments, or if your house has lost value, and you cannot sell it to pay the mortgage, you might need an attorney to defend a foreclosure lawsuit, or to try to save your house in bankruptcy. Or, you might want to find out how to get the house back to the bank, without owing money.

If you are from a foreign country and want to be in the U.S. legally to work, you’ll need a visa or green card. And, if they want to become citizens, need to go through that process. At every step of the way, they need a good lawyer.

If you are injured in an accident at work or in a car accident, lawyers help get you the compensation you deserve from the other party.

These are just some examples of times a lawyer can help you find the correct path, or the best solution to your problems. You are not alone, we are here to help.

Even if you are calling about an area of law we don’t do, we can steer you in the right direction, and find another attorney who can give you expert advice. We limit our practice to bankruptcy and foreclosure defense, so we can give you the best quality advice and service.
