How long does bankruptcy take?

This was a question asked on AVVO, and here is my answer:

A bankruptcy case, generally, takes about 5-6 months from the date it is filed to the “discharge” or end of the case, if it is a Chapter 7 Bankruptcy. Other cases, like Chapter 13, which involve payments, last from 3-5 years. It is best to call an experienced bankruptcy attorney to discuss your situation to see which type of case is best for you, which you qualify for, and your goals.

Also, how long the process takes depends on how long you take to provide necessary documentation such as tax returns, pay stubs, bills, and other information to your attorney.
