How Can you Tell if your Property is being Foreclosed on?

Bankruptcy Lawyer

Here is the question from Avvo.com

Property foreclosed?
My mom called me and said she received a phone call from an attorney telling her that her house was being foreclosed on. How can she verify that information if her home is being foreclosed? She said she didn’t not receive anything from the bank. She’s in her late 60’s and I’m thinking she’s being scammed.

My Answer:

She should not believe anything from a random phone call. She can review her county recorder’s office to see if anything has been filed. Or, she can check with the circuit court online. Also, she should call her mortgage company. She should demand that any claim be backed up in writing. She should call a lawyer if she gets any documents that she doesn’t understand.
