Let’s dive into the world of federal student loan repayment and forgiveness programs. As of now, there are several options available to help borrowers manage their student loan debt. Here are some key programs:
- Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF):
The PSLF program allows eligible borrowers to receive forgiveness of the remaining balance of their Direct Loans after making 120 qualifying monthly payments while working full-time for a qualifying employer.
Qualifying employers include government organizations, non-profits, and other public service entities.
There is also the potential for forgiveness under the Temporary Expanded Public Service Loan Forgiveness (TEPSLF) opportunity. If some of your payments were under a non-qualifying repayment plan, you may still qualify for TEPSLF if you meet other requirements.
- Income-Driven Repayment Plans:
These plans adjust your monthly payments based on your income and family size, such as SAVE, and ICR.
After 20 or 25 years of payments (depending on the plan and whether the loan is for undergraduate or graduate school), any remaining balance is forgiven.
Note that payments made under these plans count toward PSLF if you work for a qualifying employer.
- Total Permanent Disability Forgiveness (TPD)
This program requires that a medical practitioner certify that you cannot work in an income-producing job for the foreseeable future.
Or, you can qualify if you have already been found permanently disabled by the Social Security Administration. There is a limited monitoring period involved. This requires an application. We can help you through this process.
- Recent Changes:
As of July 1, 2023, Federal Student Aid implemented regulatory changes to the PSLF program.
Paused payments due to the COVID-19 emergency count toward PSLF and TEPSLF as long as you meet other qualifications.
There will be more updates to the SAVE income-based repayment program to be implemented in July, 2024, to help borrowers.
Remember that each borrower’s situation is unique, so it’s essential to explore these programs thoroughly and determine which one aligns best with your circumstances. Always stay informed about any updates or changes to these programs. We can answer your questions, and help you take control of your Student Loans, and your life!
